Andrea Ramolo

ABOUT ANDREA RAMOLO

Andrea Ramolo is a long-time Canadian touring and recording artist, a multiple Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, an award-winning filmmaker and music video director,  and an actor and educator.  She was one-half of the successful folk harmony duo Scarlett Jane and more recently released her 8th studio record - an ancestral Italian electronic folk album with Italian band Kalàscima.

In 2023, she won the Canadian Ethnic Media Award for Best Documentary for her first feature-length Canada Arts Council-funded music documentary THE SOUTH.  Her co-direction on her own music video for FREE (ft. Kinnie Starr) was awarded Best Folk Video at the 2022 Canadian Independent Music Video Awards.  Andrea is presently working on her 9th studio record which she plans to self-produce while simultaneously sharpening her skills and love for producing and creating spaces for her colleagues.

Andrea is the artistic director of a brand new Toronto music festival called Our Music Festival - boasting a lineup that celebrates female and gender-diverse voices only.  Having had a hand in producing large multi-artist and multidisciplinary events in the past, including a five year run of a women’s music collective alongside a handful of her talented colleagues, coupled with multiple inspiring conversations that came out of an online meetup group of some of Canada’s most profound female and non-binary artists throughout the pandemic, Andrea decided she wanted to have a hand in helping to initiate more change for her peers in the music industry.

She was the host of her own radio show called Vintage Italy with Andrea Ramolo on ITOC Radio, has currently finished directing her first comedic short film as part of a great initiative to get more women and non-binary filmmakers onto sets, and continues to tour her music and documentary nationally and internationally.

About “the SOUTH”

Following the death of her matriarch and beloved grandmother, The South follows Italian-Canadian recording artist and dancer Andrea Ramolo to the Salento in southern Italy to explore the rich history of its folk music and dance. Director Giuseppe Marco Albano captures Andrea as she uncovers the cultural phenomenon of the tarantate, the evolution of the pizzica, and the healing rituals of the south, and the Salento in particular.

The film also follows her and Italian world music band Kalàscima behind-the-scenes as they embark on the recording of a new collaborative Italian album which takes a modern approach to traditional music and honours Andrea’s connection to the land and to her ancestors.

Throughout her journey, Andrea learns from the locals, like pizzica dancers Lucia Scarabino, Stefano Campagna, and Mattia Politti, the famous polyphonic singers le sorelle Gaballo of Nardò, and New Jersey based tamburello mentor Alessandra Belloni, among others. Andrea uses the healing traditions of the past and the south to grieve and heal from her recent loss.

As a first generation Italian—Canadian woman, Andrea is given this unique opportunity to learn from the south, from the past, and from the charming and colourful characters she encounters along the way.

From legends of spider bites to the healing power of music and dance, Andrea brings her newfound knowledge of southern Italian tradition back to Canada in a unique and captivating way.
